Our hearts long for love and for relationships that build us up rather than criticize or tear us down. Yet genuine connection is mutual: we must also draw near to those who draw near to us. It takes two people to connect.
Is God Distant?
Many people picture God as infinitely far away, residing in another dimension called heaven. But that is not the whole truth.

The Bible reveals a God who is anything but distant or uninvolved. Again and again, Scripture describes how He draws near to His creation:

God was nearer to Israel than to any other nation (Deuteronomy 4:7). Israel alone received His law (Deuteronomy 4:8), and through this special relationship God intended to bless all nations (Genesis 28:14).
The Lord Is Near to the Brokenhearted
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted. He sees, hears, and rescues righteous people who cry out to Him (Psalm 34:15), while opposing those who do evil (Psalm 34:16). The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and those whose spirit is crushed (Psalm 34:18).
The Lord Is Near to Sincere Prayer
He is close to all who call on Him sincerely (Psalm 145:18). When God seems a trillion miles away and deaf to our prayers, that distance is an illusion. He is closer than our next breath.
The Lord Is Near in Troubled Times
Even when people nearby devise wicked plans for their own benefit (Psalm 119:150), God remains equally near (Psalm 119:151). Daily headlines remind us that wrongdoing often happens close to home.
Unlike any human being, God is both near and far (Jeremiah 23:23). He is present with us, with suffering people around the world, and with every star in the universe’s billions of galaxies. He knows both people and stars by name (Isaiah 43:1; Psalm 147:4).
Drawing Near to God
Drawing near to God begins with a sincere heart (Hebrews 10:22). Faithful people make Him their refuge and tell others about His deeds (Psalm 73:28). He becomes their dwelling place and their passion.
Like Jesus, they devote themselves to closeness with God the Father (Jeremiah 30:21). Drawing near means placing God at the center of life, seeking to please Him, and pursuing clean hands and a pure heart (James 4:8).
Nearness Brings Confidence
God is always near, and He moves toward those who seek Him (Acts 17:27; James 4:8). His nearness changes the way they live (Philippians 4:5) and gives them confidence to bring every care and worry to Him in prayer (Hebrews 4:16; Philippians 4:6).
Near Through Christ
The atoning blood Christ shed on the cross makes closeness to God possible even for people who once had no desire to serve Him (Ephesians 2:13). God transforms their hearts, enabling them to forsake wicked ways and thoughts and turn toward Him. In mercy, He forgives them (Isaiah 55:6).
Jesus promises His enduring presence to people with transformed hearts as they make disciples throughout the world (Matthew 28:20). He will never leave or forsake them (Hebrews 13:5). Indeed, God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Spirit dwell with and within them (John 14:23; John 14:17).
God is both transcendent and near to everyone—and He is especially close to those who sincerely seek Him.
