When Doubts About God Arise
When the sun is shining, your stomach is full, and everything is going your way, it is easy to conclude that God loves you. When you are hurting, life seems unfair and even cruel, and the light at the end of the tunnel disappears, you might wonder if God even exists.
The Bible's Clear Answer
Does God love me? The Bible answers that question with a yes; you can bet your life on it. In fact, that is what He asks you to do. To give up your life daily to follow Him who loves you most (Luke 9:23) and to obey Him, showing that you love Him (John 14:15).
God's Love Flows from His Character
He loves you because of who He is. It is hard-wired in His character. God is love (1 John 4:8).
The Greatness of God's Love
That love is immeasurably great and enduring. “Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies” (Psalm 36:5). The Hebrew word translated as “love” in Psalm 36:5 is a complex combination of mercy, loyalty, commitment, and love, all packed into one word. It is used 248 times in the Hebrew text.
God Describes Himself as Loving
God described Himself using it (translated “abounding in love”) in Exodus 34:6: “And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, ‘The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.’” God’s actions demonstrate His unflickering, unflinching love and faithfulness.
God's Faithfulness Throughout History
Old Testament history repeatedly demonstrated God’s steady, loyal love even though Israel repeatedly disappointed and disobeyed Him. They continued to sin.
The Greatest Demonstration of Love
God continued to forgive them through a sacrificial system that foreshadowed His once-for-all-time sacrifice of His Son, enabling Him to forgive sinners justly because Jesus died in their place (Romans 5:8). That is the greatest demonstration of God’s love (John 3:16).
Grace Instead of Merit
You don’t deserve His outpoured love that reveals itself in a thousand ways, and neither do I. We don’t experience it because of our exemplary performance and worthiness. It flows toward us apart from any merit in us.
Adopted by God's Grace
“But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy (Ephesians 2:4), made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved” (Ephesians 2:5). Furthermore, by grace through faith, God has adopted you as His child (1 John 3:1). He chose you.
Created and Known by God
Like the girlfriend who loves, God demonstrates His love for you in many ways. You are not the product of biological chance. Your existence is no accident. God created you in His image and knows everything about you.
God's Personal Knowledge of You
He knitted you together in your mother’s womb (Psalm 139:13). He knows the brand of toothpaste you use and could pick your toothbrush out of a pile of 100,000 brushes. He could tell you the number of hairs on your head twenty years ago, last week, and today (Matthew 10:30). He knows all about you because He loves you.
God's Loving Provision
Because God loves you, He provides for you. He feeds the world’s 50 billion wild birds.2 How much more will He take care of you? (Matthew 6:26).
Nothing Can Separate You from His Love
His love is never exhausted, never quits, with supernatural bonding strength in life’s ups and downs. No one can separate you from it. Nothing in all creation can pull you away from it (Romans 8:39).
Receiving God's Love Personally
How can you experience that love? A hostess offers you a glass of cold water on a steamy summer day. It is not yours until you accept her offer.
Jesus Is God's Gift of Love
Jesus embodies God’s love and offers Himself to you as your Savior and Lord. He is yours and so is His love when you accept Him and become a child of God (John 1:12).
