Jesus made extraordinary claims about Himself. Before examining them, it is helpful to consider what is known about Him as a historical figure. The New Testament Gospels are the primary sources; Matthew, Mark, and Luke were written within forty years of Jesus’ death and resurrection.3
His Ministry and Opposition
According to the Gospels, Jesus traveled throughout Israel, performing miracles: He healed the sick, fed thousands from meager resources, raised the dead, and calmed storms. He taught about the Kingdom of God and rebuked religious leaders who appeared spiritually healthy but did not practice what they preached. Their lips honored God, while their hearts were far from Him (Mark 7:6).
His penetrating exposure of their hypocrisy angered them so deeply that they plotted to kill Him (Matthew 26:4).
His Life and Public Ministry
Jesus was born around 4 BCE in Bethlehem, descended from King David, and grew up in Nazareth.
His public ministry began when He was about thirty (Luke 3:23) and lasted roughly three years. It ended with His crucifixion in Jerusalem, when His followers numbered fewer than 150 (Acts 1:15).
The Resurrection
The crucifixion was not the end of Jesus’ life, but a turning point. He rose from the dead and appeared repeatedly to His followers—including as many as 500 at one time (1 Corinthians 15:6). He gave them many convincing proofs that He was alive (Acts 1:3).
His resurrection sets Him apart from the central figures of every other religion. It provides evidence that He is the Son of God (Romans 1:4). The historical evidence for the resurrection is substantial.4
Jesus’ unique claims demand a verdict. If they are true, the fitting response is worship. If they are false, then the most influential person who ever lived must be dismissed as either an extraordinary liar or a deluded lunatic.
