Code Blue Christians: Signs of Spiritual Decline and the Call to Revival

“Code blue” Christians are spiritually dying—complacent, self-satisfied, and disengaged from God’s purposes. Like the church in Sardis, they appear alive but lack spiritual power, commitment, and vigilance. Scripture warns that comfort-driven faith leads to destruction. Yet hope remains because repentance, wholehearted devotion, watchfulness, inward purity, and dependence on God’s grace can restore life, proving genuine salvation through faithful, growing obedience to Christ.

What “Code Blue” Means for Christians

Code blue refers to patients in cardiac or respiratory distress, as they turn blue. Let us consider the characteristics of code blue Christians and their resuscitation.

The Danger of Spiritual Complacency

Dying Christians are complacent, spiritually lazy, and self-satisfied. Jesus has no kind words for them (Revelation 3:1-6). Have you noticed that the less we do, the less we want to do? Laziness is habit-forming.

It begins as cobwebs and progresses to steel chains, and often ends in a premature casket. The broad, easy way of life leads to destruction (Matthew 7:13-14). Dying Christians play it safe.

The Church in Sardis Was Alive in Name, Dead in Reality

Sardis had wealth and fame when John wrote Revelation. Neither heresy nor external opposition was a problem in the church because their brand of Christianity offended no one. They were not persecuted because they did not invade or threaten the enemy’s territory.

Tradition, Comfort, and Human-Powered Faith

Dying Christians don’t follow God’s agenda. The Christians in Sardis seemed alive and thriving, but they were dead (Revelation 3:1). Dying Christians are usually tradition-bound and human-powered.

The love and power of the Spirit are noticeably absent. They are not committed to God’s will for their lives.

Dying Christians are not committed to other Christians. The church is paralyzed when leaders fail to lead or followers fail to follow. Those who do only what is best for themselves are code-blue Christians.

The Hope of Repentance and Restoration

The good news is that dying Christians can repent. The parable of the repenting prodigal son illustrates that repentance brings the dead to life. The father said, “For this son of mine was dead and is alive again” (Luke 15:24 NIV). Repenting means dethroning God’s competition and making Christ and His word our ultimate authority.

Rekindling Commitment and Watchfulness

Dying Christians must decide to follow Jesus wholeheartedly. The fire among the Christians in Sardis was going out. They were half-hearted followers who needed to fan the embers before it was too late.

Dying Christians must become watchful. Enemies had twice conquered Sardis because of a lack of watchfulness.

By night, adversaries had scaled the vertical cliffs on which the city was built and found no guard. We maintain watchfulness through regular Bible reading, prayer, church attendance, evangelism, and using our spiritual gifts to serve.

Purity, Perseverance, and True Salvation

Dying Christians must strive for inward purity. A few Christians in Sardis were more concerned about inward purity than outward appearance.

Jesus described them as walking with Him dressed in white (Revelation 3:4). Their clothing symbolized their salvation and shared life with Him.

The Book of Life contains only the names of Christians who overcome by God’s grace through faith. Grace isn’t cheap.

A self-serving, easy-street, best-of-both-worlds salvation is no salvation at all. Our spiritual lives demonstrate a genuine relationship with Christ through growth, repair, reproduction, power, and faithfulness.
