Jesus Is My Shepherd

Jesus is leading a flock of sheep through a grassy meadow with a stream running through it.

It seemed strange to hear a seminarian say the equivalent of “My teachers are my students.” The seminarian was teaching Sunday school in a church near the seminary he attended.

He had multiple seminary professors in his class. They said they needed to apply God’s word to their lives as much as to their students. The student teacher was somewhat intimidated. It was an unexpected reversal.

Initially, saying, “The Lamb is my shepherd,” seems strange, but He is. “They will never again be hungry or thirsty; they will never be scorched by the heat of the sun. For the Lamb on the throne will be their Shepherd. He will lead them to springs of life-giving water. And God will wipe every tear from their eyes” (Revelation 7:16-17 NLT).

Because the LORD is our shepherd, we have everything we need (Psalm 23:1). He will protect and provide for us forever! Jesus is the LORD of Psalm 23.

John the Baptist called Jesus the Lamb of God: “The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! (John 1:29 NLT). He is God’s designated sacrifice for our sins.

Peter described His sacrificial mission. “For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And it was not paid with mere gold or silver, which lose their value.  It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but now in these last days he has been revealed for your sake” (1 Peter 1:18-20 NLT).

Jesus shared His shepherd’s job description. “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me were thieves and robbers. But the true sheep did not listen to them. Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures. The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.”

“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd sacrifices his life for the sheep. A hired hand will run when he sees a wolf coming. He will abandon the sheep because they don’t belong to him and he isn’t their shepherd. And so the wolf attacks them and scatters the flock. The hired hand runs away because he’s working only for the money and doesn’t really care about the sheep.”

“I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me, just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep. I have other sheep, too, that are not in this sheepfold. I must bring them also. They will listen to my voice, and there will be one flock with one shepherd” (John 10:7b-16 NLT).

We become right with God only through faith in Jesus, God’s Lamb. He saves, provides a rich, satisfying life, and protects His sheep who know and obey His voice and follow Him.
