Be the Church (Part 1 of 3)

I once pretended to be sick when I was a child to avoid going to church. Within a day or two, I became sick. Was it a coincidence? Let me just say I only did that once!

Going to church is not the same as being the church. Fans of Jesus go to church, but Jesus is gathering followers, not recruiting fans. His followers are the church, His hands and feet on earth 24/7. Being the church is a lot more than attending worship services regularly.

If you are a new believer and have never or rarely gone to church, attending worship services regularly suggests you are making significant progress. I say “suggests” because only God knows what you do and why you do it. Doing the right thing for the right reason is challenging. Why you go to worship services is at least as important as going. King David rejoiced when he could go to the Lord’s house (Psalm 122:1). It was not a duty, but a joy! Today the Lord lives in His followers. When we meet with them, we meet God in a way we do not when we worship Him privately. In God’s presence is fullness of joy (Psalm 16:11). Worshipping Jesus with other followers will bring you joy!

The church is not a building with pews, theater seats or folding chairs where a few perform, and many criticize. It is a living organism created by God—the body of which Christ is head (Colossians 1:18). Being the church means living interdependently with other believers and dependently on Christ, the head of the church. You can’t call yourself a football player unless you are part of a team. Football is a team sport. You should not call yourself a Christian unless you are part of Christ’s church. Christianity is not an individual endeavor. As the members of a football team depend on one another to carry out assigned roles for the team to be successful, so it is with the body of Christ, the church. #freechristiandiscipleshipresources #freechristianleadershipresources #church
